I'd say my goal is around 185, no definite timeframe in mind but a year would be nice. I haven't started yet ? need to get the diet sorted and get my student loan/paychecks, whichever comes first in order to finance the diet+gym membership. Also, motivation shouldn't be an issue for me.
My goal is to become generally more athletic since I'm active sports-wise, I play a lot of basketball but am also fairly keen on football (soccer). I think, previously, my diet has restricted athletic progress, I can easily eat a lot but am fine with having one solid meal a day and snacking to keep the hunger down. Probably how I stay so skinny. I am completely unsatisfied by my athletic ability. Strength, speed and explosiveness wise. I've started reading Starting Strength, had a look at the calorie calculators, swole.me and got myself some numbers.
So here come the questions ? using [this thread](http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=121703981), I've calculated I should be consuming 2700kcal, 168g protein, 102g fats, 277g carbs a day but it would be good if someone with some experience could have a look just in case it's way off. I have a fairly active lifestyle, walk 1.2miles to university most days and my average walking speed is between 4 and 4.5 mph (brisk walker). Although right now is a pretty sedentary period of the year, so I'm not actually doing much exercise or much of anything. But usually I play basketball 2-3 times a week, 1.5 hours of pretty strenuous play but sometimes half-court games for 3 hours. Some weeks, I might play every day while others I might not get the chance to play at all. So basically, I'm thinking that taking the more active weeks, maybe the 2700 isn't enough.
With regards to SS and barbell training in gyms, any advice for a guy with pretty much zero gym experience (stepped foot in a gym maybe 10 times in my life). Having done the squat stretch a few times while reading SS, I feel like with a bit more practice I should be fine but the advice is to, at first, use just the bar ? basically, start slow. Is this practical at a gym? Also, how do I determine what I weights I should be starting at?
Also, I don't think GOMAD is for me. For now, I have no idea whether I'm a hardgainer or not so I'll start off with a regular diet, and take it from there.
Finally, slightly off-topic, any advice/good guides on improving explosiveness/vertical leap/speed? more
