I tried to avoid super obvious ones like Oldboy, Amelie, Akira Kurosawa, etc etc. [**Un Flic**](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067900/) Jean Pierre-Melville may be a far from unknown director, but his last movie (He died a year later) Un Flic doesn't get much attention. It stars Alain Delon (who also worked with Melville in Le Samuorai and Le Cercle Rouge) as a cop trying to solve a heist led by a good friend of his. Like many of Melville's movies, its moves at a slow pace. However, that doesn't stop it from being enjoyable. There is one particular scene on a train that had me on the edge of my seat, even though not a single line of dialogue was spoken for what could have been over ten minutes. **The works of Wong Kar Wai, pre In The Mood for Love** Made internationally famous by his romance masterpiece[ In the Mood for Love](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118694/), it might be easy to forget his earlier works. [As Tears Go By](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096461/) His first directorial effort is about a Triad member who tries to balance life of crime, often made complicated because of his hot-head gangster brother, and his romantic life after he develops an affair with his cousin. [Days of Being Wild](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101258/) *Days* was the first glimpse into the style he intended to use for several of his later movies. It is a romance/drama that focuses on several characters in the 1960's. A man passively lets two women who have fallen for him compete for his love while he himself grows distant after finding out that the women who raised him is not in fact his mother. While the two women become increasingly distraught, they confide in other men. One of which is a cop played by Andy Lau, who you will recognize if you have seen Infernal Affairs. [Chungking Express ](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109424/) Many consider *Chungking* to be his "clashing tales of love" formula perfected. This and *In the Mood* are the only works of his to be included in the Criterion Collection. This tells the tales of two cops (unknown to each other, or at least if I remember correctly). One pining over his ex still believing there's hope and the other still left a little somber after a break up with his flight attendant girlfriend. Throw in the two women, one a mysterious criminal and the other a slightly obsessive worker in a small snack shop and you have the respective love interests. [Fallen Angels](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112913/) Now THIS is my favorite Wong Kar Wai movie. Its a sequel of sorts to *Chungking*, with the first cop from *Chungking* reprising his role. It tells two tales: The first being of a contract killer and his assistant/manager who had a brief fling but he decides to end it and of the cop (no longer a man of the law) who spends his nights breaking into stores and stalls and "opening them" to customers. **Recommender's Note**: [Happy Together](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118845/) was left out because I haven't seen that one yet. **Recommender's Note 2**: All of the recommended movies except for Chungking are on Netflix streaming, plus a few more of his. **Recommender's Note 3**: TIL Wong Kar Wai directed an American movie with Natalie Portman and Jude Law. Goes to show what kind of fan I am. **[Tetsuo: The Iron Man](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096251/)** Clocking in at 67 minutes, *Tetsuo* is a brief but memorable film. Its a surrealist horror movie that oozes an Eraserhead feel (One poster I've seen described as a mix of Lynch and Cronenberg). Shot in black and white it tells the tale of a man who after running over a man with a metal fetish and dumping his body in a ravine, notices a chunk of metal growing out of his cheek. It only gets worse. [**Come and See**](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091251/) Probably the only movie I've seen that really nails down the horror of war. Its a russian movie that takes place during WWII. Its protagonist is a young boy who flees from the base of a resistance movement he joined after a bombing, encounters the atrocities of the nazi's and the horrors of war. Ebert said in his great movies entry for the film that it is "one of the most devastating movies about anything ever". [**Ashes and Diamonds**](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052080/) A polish movie that also takes place during WWII. A young resistance fighter is ordered to kill a communist district leader but starts debating whether or not he should do it after finding out the target is a former soldier and when he begins a love affair which changes his outlook on life. [**Alphaville**](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058898/) Jean Luc-Godard is a legendary director with many classics, but this is most likely his most under appreciated feature. Its a sci-fi noir that takes place in the city of Alphaville, in an entirely different galaxy. A US secret agent is sent their in the guise of a journalist to accomplish two tasks. Find an agent sent before and free the city of its dystopian rule. Yes, Alphaville is the text book definition of dystopia. People are executed by the dozens for exhibiting emotions. All the while the supercomputer that runs the city spits out philosophical rants (in an admittingly grating voice). Certainly not his best movie, but its definitely an interesting feature.
