EDIT: Ok my GF says she has better stories, so here I will let her type: 1) Anti-stem cell research psychos (who don't even know what stem cells are) generally send threat mail to PIs and gather round campus. But last year, they went a bit over board when they showed up at a professor's home and covered his pricey car in paint as part of protest. The freaky part is they know where you live and are irrational. Who cares about the car? The prof has kids and it's really scary knowing that these psychos could be coming back for more. 2) Animal activists also showed up at my undergrad campus. Their major target was the Dean of Biological Sciences. They repelled down the new Bio Sci building as part of protest and refused to come down. What they neglected to figure out, was that the Dean was actually a plant biologist. None of his specimens were animals, so these animal activist idiots were protecting the rights of plants. Woo fucking hoo! 3) That's all I can think of now. But I would like to get it out there that vendors/sales people who walk in the hall ways and attempt to disturb my experiments are super annoying too. My favorite convo to date: Rep: "We are having a great offer on DNA purification kits...blah blah blah" Me: "I have one I like, don't use it often, don't need another brand" Rep: "You don't do it often?! SO WHAT DO YOU DO?!" *DNA purification is really a tiny little bit of my research. Chasing Bokeh: Spent a few hours in an old car junkyard this weekend. Unfortunately it was bright and sunny all day, but this place would be fantastic on a wet and overcast day. The color in all the old rusty cars was amazing. This shot of an old oxidized hood ornament is pretty much straight out of the camera, with just a slight boost of saturation. The magenta and blue area off the right side of the ornament is actually another photographer, who thoughtfully wore some nice colors for the occasion! By the way, the reason for the angled up view is that the hood was actually up and I couldn't close it -- which actually turned out okay for this shot.

The Sun Valley of Cairo: If you've ever been to the area in Los Angeles known as Sun Valley (in northern San Fernando Valley), you'll know that it's known for its car junk yards. There are certain areas in Sun Valley where "wreckage yard" and "auto dismantling" signs densely saturate the skyline as much as the billboards and ads do on Sunset. If you ever need any type of car part, head over to Sun Valley because that city has it all. Well, I think I've found the Sun Valley of Cairo. Because I live in it. My street is named after the French heiroglyph Jean-François Champollion, who was given the task of deciphering the Egyptian portions of the Rosetta Stone from 1822-1824 and is credited as giving birth to the field of modern Egyptology. This guy was huge, to say the least. The street starts at one of the main streets in Downtown Cairo, 26th of July (and along its stretch is home to Abou Tarek, a popular Egyptian koshary joint... closed during Ramadan), and ends at the foot of the famous Cairo museum, the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, wherein you can find artifacts Champollion no doubt had his hands in, and where the mummy of Ramses II himself is safely kept. So if the man was a big deal, the street should be a pretty big deal as well, right? Major wrong. From the start to the finish, all you'll find on Shambluan (the Arabized way of spelling his name) is car part after car part after car part. And because there are no garages, the cars are built right there, on the street. Luckily it's a one-way street because two lanes going down that congested road would create even worse traffic jams than it already does. I'm a car guy, so I should feel at home here, but I don't. I have no clue why. The smell? The constant greasy hands? The loud banging at all hours of the day? All could be factors why I just don't feel at home on the streets. But I will say this, of all the streets in Downtown Cairo, nothing reminds me of America more than the modified cars and English bumper stuckers on Shambliuan. I think the man pictured is named Hamad. I have to start writing these names down because you either find someone named Muhammad -- literally every third person here is named Muhammad -- or a very random name I've never heard before. But I was never really good with names. He was a nice guy who spoke very little English, but got very excited when he saw the camera and wanted to pose in front of the Civic he was working on. ---------- blog: modenadude.com

This German/sian wannabe ghostrider crashes when he underestimates his own speed and the distance to theont car. The amazing part about it is that he stands up, crosses the y road and goes back to his bike. Even though the bike is totaled, he has only minor injuries (consion & shoulder cle rupture). Take a look at his protective bike dress and let it be a lesson... I don't wanna know what would have happened if he hadn't worn it - still pretty amazing. Btw, in the end he says he is still driving this crazy until today. I'm surprised he hasn't earned a Darwin award yet... [Correction]: Apparently he'som Luxembourg and not sian. The accents in German sound really similar and the name they gave him is sian.

Best Buy is pissing me off. Bought a car stereo through them and the Geek Squad installation for it. Now I don't mind if I have to pay extra for the parts. But they don't even carry the parts to do it. Wish they would have told me this in the first place. Now I have to go somewhere else to get it installed.
