Need some help in determining how many carbs I should eat daily.
I have recently been reading about low-carb diets and how supposedly they are healthy for you and allow for rapid weight loss. However, I am 18 years old, 6'2", and 145 pounds. Should I bother? Recently I have started Starting Strength/Stronglifts and workout 3 times a week doing barbell exercises such as squats, the bench press, power cleans, deadlifts, and the overhead press and besides that I am sedentary on the computer all day. I have always been slightly underweight regardless of how much I eat and find difficulty justifying a low-carb diet because I am sure I could eat all the carbs I want and still not gain any weight. However, after reading about all the supposed health benefits of a low-carb diet I have begun to think that maybe I should just do it for that reason. However, to what degree should I do it, or at all? Should I have the bowl of oatmeal for breakfast with my eggs? Should I have whole-grain pasta/brown rice with my chicken breast? How much? Doing a workout is quite difficult and are not carbs your main energy source? With a low-carb diet wouldn't doing barbell lifts be considerably more difficult and/or dangerous? I was under the impression that one should have complex carbs before a workout and simple carbs after (dextrose) along with carbs for breakfast (way over 50g as recommended by low-carb diets already). Unless I was under ketosis where my body used ketones instead of glycogen for fuel, wouldn't I be heavily lacking fuel which is normally from carbohydrate intake? Also, would ketosis be a good idea considering my body weight, metabolism, and lifestyle (barbell lifts and otherwise sedentary)? Overall I guess I could say I'm confused as to whether or not I should change my diet at all in regard to carbs because right now I get a ton of carbs from whole grains such as brown rice, whole grain bread and pasta, and oatmeal and I am already skinny and feel healthy. If I should lower my carbs then to what amount? 100g per day? 50g? 20~30g to the point of ketosis? Should I do ketosis while lifting heavy weights 3 times a week? Where does one's energy come from on a low-carb diet for weight-lifting? more

So I never realized that weight loss could be so easy. In in spite of barely running at all due to a knee injury, I lost 10 lbs and 2 inches around my belly in three weeks adopting a super low carb restiction diet. Now I'm phasing back in green vegetables and a few nuts for perhaps 25% of total calories. Oh, and I never felt better or had more energy. Thank you Gary Taubes. by J. Brett Smith
