Culture definition from wikipedia: When Culture (, lit. "cultivation") first began to take its current usage by Europeans in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century (having had earlier antecedents elsewhere), it connoted a process of cultivation or improvement, as in agriculture or horticulture.
When Culture (Latin: cultura, lit. "cultivation")[1] first began to take its current usage by Europeans in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century (having had earlier antecedents elsewhere), it connoted a process of cultivation or improvement, as in agriculture or horticulture. In the nineteenth century, it came to refer first to the betterment or refinement of the individual, especially through education, and then to the fulfillment of national aspirations or ideals. In the mid-nineteenth century, some scientists used the term "culture" to refer to a universal human capacity. For the German nonpositivist sociologist Georg Simmel, culture referred to "the cultivation of individuals through the agency of external forms which have been objectified in the course of history".[2]

The Rock Garden of Chandigarh - unmatched creation by Padamshree Nek Chand: © Capt Suresh Sharma. All Rights Reserved I am sure many of you are aware of the world famous Rock Garden of Chandigarh - The City Beautiful, as this city is popularly known. Mr Nek Chand the creator of the garden is a living legend of our times. Usually, when I have time, I go to the Rock Garden to spend some time in the esteemed company of Mr Nek Chand, who is decorated with the title Padam Shri, an award, stands fourth in the hierarchy of civilian awards, given by the Government of India generally to Indian citizens to recognize their distinguished contribution in various spheres of activity. I am an ardent admirer of Mr Nek Chand, as he has true story which inspires me to follow his path - `love your job passionately?. He was a road inspector with public works department of the city and in his free time he used to collect waste on his bicycle i.e. broken porcelain, crowns of soft-drink bottles, broken electrical fitments, bangles, etc. To collect his treasure trove of waste tirelessly, he used to land up at the back-rooms of shops, quarries, as well as refuse areas of hotels, restaurants, hospitals, medical supplies, electrical stores. And industrial waste of every conceivable type, which was discarded by others and collected by Nek Chand as his treasure. I think, since he was a road inspector, he knew exactly which `road of life? to tread, the least treaded by others. No hurdles and pain could deter him from his passion and his love. After office hours, he used to visit his hideout and create artifacts of art, out of that so called junk. He is the right example of `karam karro faal kee icchha naa karro? (do your work selflessly and without expectations of rewards, good job always gets rewarded). The City Beautiful, is also known for its gardens, but Mr Nek Chand?s Rock Garden is synonym to Chandigarh, world over. The path to reach the pedestal, where Padamshree Nek Chand ji is standing today, has not been that easy. Many people, mostly out of jealousy, majority of ill minded government officers, tried to destroy this unique creation. Of course, there were great legendary officers like Mr MS Randhawa, who patronised the Rock Garden, as they knew what unique creation it was. Here I would like to mention that Dr Randhawa?s contribution as the founder Chief Commissioner of Chandigarh will always be remembered as all time great. I have never met such a great legendry who is so humble and simple. Following are excerpts from the book ?NEK CHAND?S OUTSIDER ART ? The Rock Garden of Chandigarh. Working in a world of his own, Nek Chand devoted himself to the fruits of his imagination, quite unaware that he might be operating in the field of the `creative arts?. In all humility he observed: ?I regard myself as neither an artist nor a craftsman. I myself was completely insignificant. I had no idea about anything, except for the fact that I was devoting my time to a task I was passionate about. I worked to the limits of my strength. It all came from my heart and my imagination. My intension was to build a kingdom of gods and goddesses. It is a gift from God. This Garden is more than an offering to God.
her hands, my legs: Copyright © 2006 Tatiana Cardeal. All rights reserved. Reprodução proibida. © Todos os direitos reservados. Many of you were asking about the Kayapó tatoos. So, here is how they do it, using the Genipapo fruit, wich has a black seed, a small piece of wood, and a body. The painting stays on the skin many days, like a henna painting. There is no pain, you can wash all the time... after a few days, the black color changes to purple, or blue, and them desapear. (I'm home again, I arrived last night from a trip, and just found a war in my city, the business capital Sao Paulo, living a wave of gang attacks in which 151 people, many of them police, have died in four days. The gangsters set buses ablaze and shot up banks overnight on Sunday after hitting police posts and vehicles across the city and state. This are very strange days... Some of you were writing, asking about me. I'm fine, thank you :) I'm busy, working at home, and not walking on the streets... forgive me not answering emails yet, and thank you for writing) Published by www.livinginperu.com/blogs/features/235 - interview Published by The Argentimes - interview
Tika- Surrender.: Waiting for the priest to sprinkle tika with "gold" dust. The priest first applie with his fingers a mix of sandal past and turmeric, wich has a pleasant cooling effect on forehead. Than he use a kind of wooden comb to design a pattern. Red point, beetween eyebrows, is made with sindour, lead monoxyde (oxyde de plomb in english ?) wich is supposed to have great quality : it was used in old times as medical ingredient, in India but also in Egypte. Hindu pay great attention to this spot. They call it "gyan ka netr", "oeil de connaissance". Even illitterate people know there's a direct way to perceive reality trough third eye : it gives you special insight in reality. It is suppose to be inside the forehead, at the exact point they place the red auspicious mark. Elaborate tika is a tradition in Benarès. They are kind of differents schools, not really schools? Let say priest familly, each one specialist in a certain drawing.
