We've been talking and hanging out a lot since then, and I'm fairly sure there's mutual interest on his part, but I have not yet asked him out.
A concern of mine is that he has a history of health issues and mental disorders. He has Trichotillomania, a form of OCD that causes him to pull out his hair over time. Also, around the time he was sixteen, he suffered from severe depression, along with panic attacks. He is nineteen years old now and has relatively overcome both disorders, but he thinks he may still be having panic attacks in the form of infrequent seizure-like symptoms (he had one recently for the first time in over a year). He suspects they are not true seizures, because an EEG test in the past did not evidence epilepsy. Also, lately he has been experiencing chest pain unrelated to physical activity that he thinks could be a symptom of anxiety/panic attacks.
It is very likely that his problems relate back to sexual abuse he experienced as a small child. Around the time he was depressed, he had begun remembering repressed memories from that time. He feels as though he's come to terms with the memories, but he recognizes that the abuse is probably the origin of a lot of his problems. It's worth noting that he's comfortable with intimacy and his own sexuality, however, and has successfully dated in the past.
Despite my friend's problems, he has done a lot to help his conditions. He's in college to study neurology and psychology, and already has a lot of knowledge about neuroscience. He's fairly emotionally stable at the present, and he attributes a lot of his improvements to meditation and studying Existentialism.
Disorders don't just "go away", though.
So, Reddit, I was interested in seeing if any of you guys have dated or been friends with people who have had any of these problems. My mother has suffered from anxiety and panic attacks in the past, so I have some experience with the problems. I like this guy a lot. At the least, I want to be a good friend to him.
