Now that Bethesda's halfway fixed FPS aiming and have inter-reputational consequences, I approach camps of baddies a lot like I did in FC2 (sniping\), but had to think carefully about what I did and how it would impact each faction. Do you agree? Is there anything you think New Vegas did better? I think New Vegas is actually an overall better game, but there's this super-weird, indescribable magic that FC2 has for me that makes it still stand out. I played NV on Hardcore, but it was kind of a disappointment -- with fast travel, you could just always go back to Goodsprings and get everything you needed. I don't wanna risk saying too much ? dunno what I can talk about and what I can't ? but I and several other people have been working together to come up with high and low-level story elements. - My guess is there are a lot of reasons for that ? sometimes writers aren't brought on early enough, or don't work closely with the team or whatever ? but the more I write, the more I find that writing for games is FUCKING HARD. Every bit of dialog generally must exist to inform or direct the player, and you've gotta take all the player's agency into account so you don't write something that totally shits on or ignores what the player just did, and a bazillion other things. If players are indeed more interested in playing than they are in experiencing a story, then, heck ? I don't blame them. Games are about interactivity, and most stories aren't ? I don't blame anyone for skipping cut scenes or ignoring scripted game stories. [How will video games intuitively integrate story and character exposition into the gameplay? Usually a video game separates gameplay from and exposition into different elements, that being you play a little bit and wait for the cut scene to deliver the story. Will video games ever manage to create gameplay that is inherently the story elements or will we forever wait for the cut scene to explain it to us? Personally, I always like story to be ignorable (as in BioShock or Portal) or, if it isn't ignorable, at least immersively woven into the gameplay as best as possible (Half-Life 2). I hate cut scenes, though I recognize they are sometimes a necessary evil from a production standpoint. To me, from a high-level, pie-in-the-sky sort of perspective, player-created, emergent stories will always be more interesting than pre-authored, player-oppressing scripted stories.
