Breaking News: Handyman construction2012/05/21 Bigger than gomery? quebec corruption inquiry set to get underwayMONTREAL - A public inquiry endowed with wide-ranging powers will begin hearings on Tuesday into the inner workings of Quebec's construction industry, and experts are warning the contents may not be pretty. Follow related website bookmark from Reddit: Need help building a mechanism to press a button tl;dr: I'm a building manager who needs a button in an office pressed via a remote (cell phone, internet?) ---- I'm the building manager (security, maintenance, furniture mover, handyman, jack of all trades) of a building in a city. It's been here for 30 years and we moved in within the last 6... A couple years ago, a high-rise-condo had been built across the street and they filed a complaint with the city saying our HVAC system on the roof was far too loud. Long Story Short: They're overhauling our HVAC system and the process will take 5-6 months. The construction workers need access to many rooms and escorts to many areas. I CANNOT duplicate the one key that accomplishes this (Medico, locksmiths nearby don't have the blank or won't even bother plus the key is too much of a liability to be duplicated, it's the skeleton for the entire building) so basically I'm never in my office. The problem with that: there are 4 doors that are held shut by a mag-lock and can ONLY be opened by pressing a button downstairs in my office. It disables the magnetic hold for 20-seconds. The idea is that when somebody needs to go onto the roof or through the service door, they press an intercom button and I'm supposed to press the button. THIS BLOWS now that I need to constantly be around opening doors and escorting these guys. I've been calling my boss asking her to leave her office, enter mine and press the button at least 10 times a day and she's asked if I can rig somthing up to work instead. The button is just a simple small red button on the underside of my desk. It's got 5v DC running through it, but I have no idea if I'll cause a catastrophic grounding problem if I cross streams with another device (Phone System, Computer, Intercom "Beep") so it seems as though the simplest solution is to hook up some USB-based motor (is servo the term?) and activate it via my phone through either RDP (remote desktop) or a web interface... when activated, just making the motor bump the switch (I can work out that part, it's the computer-to-reality mechanism I'm stumped at). Can anybody offer any assistance as to what'd be a good start? (Doors cannot be propped open, keys cannot be copied, I need to press this button remotely) ---- Edit: "CDRom" seems to be the new [Disco ball](http://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/a8a2v/what_is_the_official_name_for_those_mirror_disco/) I'm working on the CD-Rom Drive solution but I'd be interested in hearing about a non-mechanical solution too if one exists... otherwise it appears I'll be able to keep this entire self-contained in a CD Rom Drive http://i.imgur.com/nv8KB.jpg I've stripped the tracking that pushes the drive all-the-way-out so it'll just close the drawer again, offering a "reset" (since the eject command from windows shell won't close the drive on this one ---- Edit 2: I believe i've found my solution: a USB Relay Board more Related handyman construction videos 2012-05-21:
