Follow related website bookmark from Reddit: Thoughts on Spotify, after using it for a month I?ve used Spotify for a month. Here?s what I like:
* The price is right. Ten dollars per month buys me unlimited, commercial-free listening. I can use the native OS X application and the Android app. Before Spotify I was spending $10-20 per month at Amazon?s MP3 service, so for me this is the sweet spot for my monthly music allowance. With Amazon I can buy several albums a month, but with Spotify I get everything.
* The selection is good. I listen to a lot of mainstream music, and they have it all. I also listen to a lot of American and Irish folk music, and for a mass-market music source the selection isn?t bad. There?s a lot of here I haven?t heard before.
* The OS X application is nice to use. Search works easily and playback starts almost instantly. The mobile app works well, too. I recently used it to listen to obscure Irish music on the drive from Corvallis to Portland, and it played the whole way without a hiccup.
What I don?t like:
* No music discovery or browsing features. This was the first thing looked for, and sadly it is almost non-existent. Music discovery is limited to a few buried away ?similar artists? lists. Spotify needs to support the discovery of new music by browsing not just a handful of similar artists, but similar tracks, influences, contemporaries, etc. This is a fundamental requirement of music on the Internet.
* The social features miss the point. My friends on Facebook are not necessarily people who?s musical tastes I share, and in most cases I don't care about their playlists. Instead, help me to find people who?s musical interests are similar to my own. Hook me up with conversations about the track or album I am listening to. Let users post links to related artists that I might like. Create a real social ecosystem. Create a karma system like on Reddit. You don?t need to integrate to Facebook and you don?t need to be like Facebook. This is about people who are connected by what they are listening to, not a social graph. You will have Facebook and Google knocking on your door for your data, not the other way around. Get this right and Spotify will be a real winner.
