Please give me some advice if you can, r/travel! Ok, I'll keep this as brief as I can but just so you can understand my predicament, there are a few details I must share! First off, the backstory: Me and my girlfriend (both british, 19 y/o) arrived home yesterday after 2 weeks of visting a few spots in Italy. We both used a 1 country Interrail pass (valid just for Italy, 6 days travel in 1 month). The fateful event: On the day in question, 23/09/11, we needed to travel by train from Peschiera del Garda (Lake Garda) to Milan to get a plane to the UK. The Interrail tickets have a date box which needs to be filled in before you board the train and we had both done this, before we had even arrived at the station. Tickets were valid and in date, etc, etc. We boarded the train with no problems and settled down for the 2 1/2 hour journey. I was writing some ideas in a small notepad (i'm starting a new college course on Monday) and my girlfriend was reading. After about 15 mins of travelling, my gf nudged me and alerted me to the ticket officer. I got out both our passes, putting my notepad away. The officer argued for a few mins with an Italian man who was sat opposite us (I suspect he didn't have a ticket). When he had finished, he turned to us and said in english, "I will stamp your tickets and then you will pay a fine, ?50 and ?50, ?100 total". As you can imagine, I was shocked and confused and my gf was visibly upset. I was also very suspicious of the man as before this, he had not even looked at or acknowledged us. My gf kept saying that we don't have ?50 each, while I was trying to find out why he had said this. He announced that he had "seen us completing our tickets on the train" and he demanded our passports. I tried to explain that this was not the case, but his only response was acting as though he could not understand us and repeating his demand for our passports. Understanding that it was foolish to get drawn into a conflict with this man, especially when we had a flight to catch, I handed over my passport and asked my gf to do the same. The man took them and our tickets out of sight. He returned 5 mins later and returned our items, again saying "?50 and ?50 - ?100 total". We both protested and he said that because we couldn't pay cash, we will be sent fines to our homes and charged "?50 to ?200 each". Before he could walk off, I asked him what his name was. He recited a number (very quickly, I struggled to write it down). I asked him again and he said, "I take your details, you do not take mine". He then disappeared to a different carriage. We saw him once again shortly after and he said "you must read the rules". I responded by saying "I will dispute this from home". He left and we did not meet again. *tale over* His accusations and intimidation were completely unjustified and I honestly believe he saw us as easy targets: a young, foreign couple, backpacks between our knees, ready to go home. I believe he expected us to hand the cash over there and then, making himself a quick ?100 by throwing his weight around. My question, really, is what to do now? Who would be the right people to contact? Is it worth contacting anyone or is the whole system likely to be corrupt? Unless he was lying, we will be recieving undeserved fines through the post. The money is important to us, as on our travels we were making ?50 go a long way. As well as that however, I find it upsetting that this man using his powers to take advantage of travellers and I would like to see something done to him perhaps, to save other people from what we went through. Any help or comments would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time! more Related tickets travel videos 2012-05-23:
